Frequently asked questions

Which HEX formats can I type?

You can type a 6-digit HEX value like #7c3aed or f43f5e (the # is optional), or a 3-digit short form like #73e, which expands to #7733ee. Anything else shows an error message and leaves the current colour unchanged.

What is the difference between HSL and HSV?

Both describe a colour by its hue (the colour itself, 0–360°). HSL uses saturation and lightness, where 50% lightness is the pure colour. HSV (also called HSB) uses saturation and value, where 100% value is the pure colour. Design tools and CSS use HSL; HSV is common in colour pickers and graphics software.

How are shades and tints made?

A shade is the base colour mixed with black and a tint is the base colour mixed with white. This scale uses black mixes of 80%, 60%, 40%, 25% and 12%, then the base colour, then white mixes of 12%, 25%, 40%, 60% and 80%.

What are complementary, analogous and triadic colours?

Complementary is the colour opposite yours on the colour wheel (hue + 180°). Analogous colours sit either side of yours (±30°). Triadic colours are spaced evenly around the wheel (±120°). All three keep your colour's saturation and lightness and only rotate the hue.

Is my colour uploaded anywhere?

No. All conversions and palette calculations run in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you pick or type is uploaded or stored.
