How to use the Compress Image tool

  1. Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP image onto the box above, or click to browse.
  2. Drag the quality slider — the compressed preview and file size update live. 75–85% is a good balance for photos.
  3. Optionally switch the output format (WebP usually gives the smallest files) or cap the maximum dimension.
  4. Download the compressed image. The original on your device is untouched.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Compression happens in your browser on a canvas element. Your image never leaves your device.

Why did my PNG get bigger when saved as JPEG, or smaller as WebP?

Formats compress differently. PNG is lossless and large for photos; JPEG and WebP discard some detail to save space. WebP typically produces the smallest files at the same visual quality. Flat graphics with few colours often compress best as PNG.

What quality setting should I use?

For photographs, 75–85% is nearly indistinguishable from the original at a fraction of the size. For screenshots with crisp text, prefer PNG or a higher quality setting.

Does compressing change the image dimensions?

Only if you set a maximum dimension. Otherwise the pixel size stays exactly the same — only the file gets smaller.
