How to use the Favicon Generator

  1. Drop an image onto the box above, or click to browse. Non-square images are centre-cropped to a square first.
  2. Wait a moment while PNG icons are generated at 16, 32, 48, 180, 192 and 512 px.
  3. Download the sizes you need individually, or grab the combined favicon.ico containing the 16, 32 and 48 px icons.
  4. Copy the HTML snippet into your page's <head> and upload the icon files to your site's root folder.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Every icon — including the ICO file — is generated on a canvas in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.

What is inside the favicon.ico this tool builds?

It is a real ICO container built in code: an ICONDIR header followed by one ICONDIRENTRY for each of the 16, 32 and 48 px icons, with the PNG data of each size stored inside. Modern browsers accept PNG-compressed ICO entries, which keeps the file small while staying crisp.

Why do I need so many sizes?

Different places ask for different sizes: 16 px for browser tabs, 32 px for retina tabs and taskbars, 180 px for Apple touch icons, and 192 / 512 px for Android home-screen and PWA icons. Shipping the set means your icon looks sharp everywhere.

What image should I start with?

A square image of at least 512 × 512 px with a simple, bold design works best. Fine detail and text disappear at 16 px, so logos and symbols survive the shrink better than photos.

Where do the files go on my site?

Upload favicon.ico and the PNG files to your site's root folder (the same folder as your homepage), then paste the snippet from this page into the <head> of your HTML. Browsers also find /favicon.ico automatically even without the tag.
